Maceration is defined as the softening and breaking down of skin resulting from prolonged exposure to moisture. It was first described by Jean-Martin Charcot in 1877. Under normal circumstances, epidermal tissue forms an effective barrier against the insult from our external environment. However, when the fungal infection causes the skin to become wet and white (maceration), the skin loses its ability to act as a barrier.
Prolonged exposure of the skin to excessive moisture can result in acute maceration. The outer, flattened layer of epidermal cells becomes rehydrated, causing swelling, and the bonds between the tissue planes weaken. This drastically alters their ability to withstand damage, particularly interdigital friction.
Formula 7® Rapid MicroGel® is formulated to address the cause of the macerated tissue rapidly. Formula 7® Rapid MicroGel® liquefies at body temperature. Its penetration enhancers draw the tolnaftate into the site of involvement, its cosmetic conditioners and astringents dry the skin and help restore the barrier function of the skin.
